Recipes at the Spencer Magnet

I have a weekly recipe column at the Spencer Magnet, and I often forget to post the links here. Here's a little catch-up post of a few recent ones:

Today. . .

Outside my window... rain. Lots of rain

I am thinking...I am so tired. I need to try harder to sleep tonight

I am thankful for...Candy Cane Joe-Joes and my friend who sent them to me.

I am orange sweater, jeans and Crocs.

I am reading...The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan (for at least the 3rd time) and my drafts of my articles due tomorrow.

I am hoping... I finish the articles before my next deadline looms.

On my mind...granola. I haven't made any in 2 weeks and I miss it.

Pondering these words..."Give Proofs of Love" (from The Happiness Project by Gretchen Grubin)

From the kitchen...cara cara oranges - thinking of making marmalade with my key limes.

Around the house...laundry, planting, moving things around. A box spring in the nursery was a highlight of the day.

One of my favorite things ~ strawberries, dried cherries, toasted pecans, and raspberry dressing in my spinach salad.

A few plans for the rest of the week:  Sewing group, quilt guild, lunch with friends.

Art for Your Home

I've spent some time lately on etsy, checking out art. Etsy has a great search tool, and it's relatively easy to find art for any interest. I just type in a subject and "art print" and look through the suggestions. So I've searched "chickens art print" and "cake art print" and "hedgehogs art print" with varying results.

I'm not only getting ideas for art I would like to buy for my home, but ideas for my own art to make for my home. Etsy is great for inspiration.

I believe I started on this journey because of a post of Soulemama's about Nikki McClure's art that she has on her walls. I searched Buy Olympia for all of McClure's art and then started searching etsy for similar subjects.

These are some of the prints that caught my eye.

  • Book Titles Poster - This poster lists a bunch of children's book titles in various fonts, and you can choose the background color. I thought this would be fun to do myself with some of my favorite titles.
  • I Will Help You Grow - This print of a mother snuggling her child is very touching. It is stylized, but I like the look and the colors.
  • There's No Place Like Home - This one is really inspiring. My daughter has shoes very similar to this, and now I want to dress her up like Dorothy and take pictures.
  • Love of Books, Reading, and When I Read a Book - All of these are by the same artist as Home (alifethroughthelens). I love the stacks of books as art. I'm just not sure I agree with all the titles (I wouldn't hang art with Ayn Rand featured, personally).
  • Whimsical Laundry Day - I love the colors, I love the baby in the buggy, I love that the mama is wearing a cute dress. I love that this is art about a clothesline!
  • Keep 'Em Flying - They had me at "chickens." Really. This is from Victory Garden of Tomorrow. I have several I want from here. I'm also a fan of Eat Real Food, Compost, and Recycling is Reusing.
That's probably more than enough for now! I hope you enjoyed looking at these as much as I do.

Front Page News - Again!!!

I have an article on the front page of the Spencer Magnet again!!

Giving the Gift of Time is about a mentoring project our local elementary school sponsors for the students who are in need of it. The frustrating aspect is that more volunteers are needed - their is a waiting list of kids. If you are local and can help, please contact them. If you aren't, look around and see where your help might be needed.

Maple Syrup in Kentucky

I was surprised to learn recently that maple syrup can be produced practically in my backyard. I always thought that it was something that was done way up north, after growing up reading about maple sugaring in Little House in the Big Woods. And then I recently read The Sugar Camp Quilt by Jennifer Chiaverini, where a family produces maple syrup in the countryside of Pennsylvania.

So maple was on my mind when I saw a post on Facebook from a local farm about their newest venture in maple syrup. I quickly started stalking their page, and made an appointment to go out to the farm and learn more.

My article about Riversong Farm and their maple syrup is in today's issue of the Spencer Magnet:

Maple Goodness Right Here in Spencer County

If you have arrived here after reading the article in the Magnet, welcome. For further information about maple production in Kentucky, see Maple Syrup: It's not Just From New England Anymore.

You can find out more about Riversong Farm at their website,, or on their Facebook page.

Front Page News!!!

I started writing for the Spencer Magnet, my local paper, in May 2010. I have a special page in the features section where I write about home - including recipes, gardening, decorating and other things.

In the past couple of weeks, I have branched out of this space, mostly because we are between editors, it's a small paper, and my help is needed. This week, I got a special surprise.

My article was on the front page!! Woo hoo! I haven't had anything on the front page since I was on the high school paper, and I'm not even completely sure about that. (I was one of the editors, so the chances are good though.)

My front page article:
Taylorsville Library to get Upgrade?

I also had another non-At Home article in this week's paper:
Pet Mask Kit Donation

Thanks for reading!

Valentine's Day Ideas for All

We don't really celebrate Valentine's Day at our house. We have a nice dinner (often grilled steaks) and sometimes we'll pick up little gifts for one another, but we don't go all out like our culture expects.

All the same, I do enjoy some of the hype surrounding the day. Celebrating love is a good thing!

My articles at the Spencer Magnet have been all about Valentine's Day lately. Read on for ideas:

Homemade Candy for Valentine's Day
Valentine Ideas for Kids
Turn Valentine's Day Into a Celebration of Familial Love

I've also added some Valentine's Day books to my daughter's basket of seasonal books:

The Berenstain Bears Love Their Neighbors
Strawberry Shortcake: Be My Valentine
Snuggle Puppy by Sandra Boynton

Do you have any special Valentine's Day traditions in your family? Any favorite Valentine's books? Share your favorites in the comments
